Burawoy and other promoters of public sociology have sought to encourage the discipline to engage in explicitly public and political ways with issues stimulated by debates over public policy, political activism, the purposes of social movements, and the institutions of civil society.
The concluding chapter by Michael Burawoy, a past president of the American Sociological Association and a leading proponent of public sociology, addresses current debates surrounding public sociology and presents a constructive vision for the future that embraces and improves upon all four types of sociology.
Burawoy therefore calls for rejuvenating public sociology, particularly organic public sociology that involves sociologists working actively and often closely with justice-oriented movements to “make visible the invisible” and “the private public,” to ensure social justice (2005, pp. 7-8). As a result, somewhat idealistically, Burawoy (2005) advocates an academic revolution within sociology to generate a more equitable playing field.
